“Wayang Kulit”

Indonesian Shadow Puppets

on loan from
David Rogers

This is an exhibition of shadow puppets from Indonesia in Southeast Asia. The puppets are used as characters in plays based on ancient epics from India. A master puppeteer (the “Dalang”) and his assistants manipulate the figures while vocalizing the story line, accompanied by instrumental music and singers. The audience sees only the shadows of the puppets cast on a white cloth screen, and the effect is mesmerizing and often mystical.

See these at the library and then you can make your own shadow puppets out of paper and sticks, creating your own characters and plays.
